I live in Northeast Phoenix, Az.  Last night my husband and I were inside watching TV when we heard what we thought was thunder and at first we just ignored it,  but it continued for about 15 minutes before we finally decided it was most unusual since we were not seeing any lightning or clouds in the sky.

We went outside (this was about 8-9pm) and the noise continued for about an hour before it just stopped!  It sounded like very loud thunder or a couple of large planes-but it felt like it was just above us and covered a large area of our neighborhood.  At times it sounded like it moved a short distance but always came back to our area.  We never saw planes, helicopters, we do not have trains near us and we checked a local high school thinking maybe they were having some kind of event that may be causing this noise but they were not.  We felt it in our bodies also.

I know it sounds strange but we were outside and felt that there was something very large above our area but we could not see anything.  Today we just decided we had a “Close Encounter” of some kind! 

Confused in Arizona!

Sighting Detail:  -Huge booming sounds about 15 seconds long with 6 seconds of silence intervals in between. Went on for a little over 10 minutes. It made all the windows in my apartment shake. Sounded like a jet engine was in my living room shooting missiles. Woke up all the neighbors. The sky was clear and there were no jets or planes visible, only some lights in the distance circling on the sky in the direction of the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. I live near the air station and am very accustomed to hearing jets fly overhead. This was completely different than anything I have ever heard and was quite concerning. Have not seen or heard anything about it on the local news or internet.

Heard two sonic booms first.  Observed the con-trail of a jet moving at a rapid rate of speed from east to west.  The aircraft flew west for about two minutes and then turned back around, flying over the area a second time, this time from east to west.  The aircraft was obviously accelerating, but created only one sonic boom as it passed over this time.

Whiteman AFB is south and east of my location.  May also have been an F-15 coming out of the reserve unit at St. Louis International Airport.

What was it that shook residents in rural Waushara County out of their sleep Wednesday morning?

"I've never experienced anything like that in my life. It was strange, scary," Kevin White said.

Residents near the Town of Leon say they felt the ground shake and heard a strange noise. Even the town chairman.

"We were doing chores this morning in the barn about 4:30, and all of a sudden everything shook, rumbled, and the cows jumped a little bit and kind of looked around, and then my brother and I both heard a noise," Chris Sorenson said.

Anna Syke was in the middle of a good night's sleep when something woke her. "I was sound asleep, 4:20 in the morning, and suddenly I wake up and the house is shaking. The best you can describe it as you would experience in an earthquake."

She was expecting the worst while fearing it was all in her head.

"Nothing came on the news. I called a sheriff's department employee that I'm friends with and he had no information, and then a neighbor called me at 5:30 and confirmed exactly what I felt."

The call was from White, who felt and heard the same thing about a mile away.

He woke up because his cabin was shaking like a freight train.

"First I thought, 'Am I having a dream?' but I can't be having a dream. I thought it was an earthquake. I never experienced an earthquake, but that's what I thought an earthquake would be like," White said.

He said it sounded like thunder but was a constant rumble moving from south to north, and he could feel it through the cement slab. A minute-and-a-half later, it happened again.

White called the sheriff's department, which told him it received similar calls from other people and that it was investigating.


Given no explanation, White decided to take a look for himself.

"What it got light at 7 o'clock, I went and hopped on the snowmobile to see if I could find anything out in the woods, and I couldn't find anything out of the ordinary."

"There's a big block of 300 acres to the east of me that something could have crashed in there and you may not find it for quite a while," White offered.

"Did something crash? Did something explode? We have a lot of cabins out by us that are unoccupied, so that was going through our mind," said Syke.

The sheriff's department tells Action 2 News its deputies searched the area for a cause, like a plane crash, but came up with nothing.

The National Geological Survey and utility providers had nothing to report, either.

Which leaves those who felt and heard the rumblings to wonder what woke them.


"I've never had this happen to me in my life, and it's kind of scary when your whole foundation is shaking. You kind of want to know what's, what's going on, you know? It's unexplained," said White.

"Any answers we can get, because we're all just completely baffled, everyone who lives out here, and I think a little bit shook up -- literally, figuratively!" Syke said.

The people were woke up early around 4ish or 5ish. 

I think that it was McGregor testing their new rocket engines in US airspace.

I saw a news story online for Nov 2008 saying that the testing in Waco TX was

done already and that they were going to load onto planes and test air born.

The sounds described in the Waco news story were exactly what the people said

that they heard in the Town of Leon.

The engines are for the space program and will replace the shuttle.

There were numerous explosions without regulated time intervals between them heard over the North Tampa area. The sounds were low, similar to thunder but stronger. The weather was clear with no clouds in the sky. When I looked in the direction of the rumbling, which was to the SE, I could not see anything but the rumblings seemed to get louder. Once the low rumbling explosion sounds ended, I could hear somewhat of a low steady vibration in the same direction for another 5 minutes.

My mind was racing to fit these sounds into a category and I could not place it anywhere.

I've heard plenty of sonic booms and this lasted way too long for that to be the reason. It was very intriguing. If anybody else heard this please let me know.

-We have been getting these sounds since last summer. They sound like concussions from bombs and are grouped close together. Some are subtle, while others are very loud and cause windows and metal roofing to shake and rattle. It's hard to pinpoint where its coming from, but there are other reports from the southwest of here and that's the direction I would say it comes from. Mountain Home AFB is approx. 260 miles to the northeast and Nellis is about 300 miles to the southwest. There are no bombing ranges in this area.

 TWIN FALLS - The 'skyquakes' are back. Southcentral Idaho residents are once again reporting strange rumbling noises and periodic shaking events that have been absent for a year.

 On March 3rd, people across the region reported a loud boom and rumbling that evening to the Southern Idaho Regional Communications Center.

Geologists say no earthquakes were recorded close enough to the region to cause the event and suggest sonic booms from military aircraft.

But officials at Mountain Home Air Force Base say the closest jet was too far away to be a factor.

For several days during March of 2008 the strange rumblings happened regularly at 11:23 p.m.

Roughly a year after a series of bizarre rumbling was reported across the Magic Valley, similar incidents are being reported again in south-central Idaho and northern Nevada.

On March 3, the Southern Idaho Regional Communications Center heard from people from Buhl to Kimberly and Jerome who reported a loud boom and rumbling that evening. One off-duty dispatcher felt it in Twin Falls, and supervisor Taylor Hunsaker said he felt it at his own home in Kimberly.

"I thought (at first) it was my neighbors moving heavy equipment," Hunsaker said.

Farther south, residents of Spring Creek, Lamoille and Elko, Nev., last week reported periodic rumbling and occasional shaking over several days, all at varying times of day. Mining companies in the area told the Elko Daily Free Press that they haven't done anything unusual that would cause the rumbles and suggested that they may be sonic booms from military aircraft. But Elko County Commissioner Warren Russell said the rumbling he's heard on and off for the past few years lasts just a few seconds too long and is too continuous to be sonic booms.

Master Sgt. Brian Orban with Mountain Home Air Force Base said after the Magic Valley incident that base officials don't believe they're the cause. The closest jet at the time was 23 or 24 miles away from Twin Falls, he said, and another base doesn't report any training at the time.

"Was it a Mountain Home jet? Very likely, no," he said.

But geologists reached by the Times-News still said that sonic booms may be the best explanation. Shawn Willsey, a College of Southern Idaho geology professor, noted that no earthquakes were recorded anywhere close enough to southern Idaho to have caused the noise at the time.

William Phillips with the Idaho Geological Survey wondered about extremely tiny earthquakes, noting that scientists aren't able to record so called "micro-earthquakes." But he said he still doesn't believe an earthquake was the culprit, and noted the reports were too widespread to be something local, such as large quarry blasts.

 "What it actually is, is anyone's guess," Willsey said.

Scientists gave similar responses last March, when odd rumblings happened regularly at 11:23 p.m. for several days. But the military then also denied any involvement.

 Often called "skyquakes," the unexplained booms have become a regular occurrence worldwide in recent years, often coming in waves over the same area, according to reports on Web sites such as www.abovetopsecret.com, that track the phenomenon.

Southern California news outlets reported a strong skyquake that rattled windows across the Los Angeles-Orange County area at 9:20 p.m. on March 3 �¿��¿�" just hours after the one felt in the Magic Valley.

 The following day, March 4, another skyquake was felt over California's Central Coast region.

Seismic stations around Monterey Bay, Calif., recorded a compression wave at 9:15 a.m., but the wave lacked the up-and-down shear that usually characterizes an earthquake, officials there told the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

And on March 7 residents of Westchester County, NY, reported being shaken from their sleep by a pre-dawn skyquake that rattled the Hudson River Valley area just north of New York City.

While widely scattered, the latest string of skyquakes all resulted in the same round of denials from U.S. Geological Survey officials (no earthquakes), civil officials (no construction blasting or other known explosions) and military and civilian air traffic controllers (no exercises or high-speed flights).

One of our dogs reacted to the house and ran to the door, barking to be let in. Once inside, continued to bark running around and "checking" out the house. Our other dog whose deaf, did not react as the other but remained outside. She was looking all around and towards the sky.

Loud booming, quaking noises every 30 seconds or so coming from over the Gulf or Mexico. This was not thunder. I have been through many storms and heard every type of thunder having lived in Florida for 15 years. This sound  was of extra low frequencies. We are use to bombing from the near by air force bases north our our city, those shake the windows with no noise. This sound was definitely coming from the south and I have never heard such booming, it resembled a very low subwoofer that continuingly trembled the city.

I know people in the Destin area that also heard the sky quakes, some living a miles away.
