Large Dark Orange Fireball spotted over Bundoora, Australia October 11, 2006

Date: October 11, 2006 Time: 7:45 PM  Shape: Meteor/Fireball  Duration: 8 Seconds

Location: Bundoora (Victoria), Australia

Color: Very dark orange at origin; very light orange by end

Sound: Yes, I was not able to determine if it was a delay, but it was a light sound lasting the duration of the visible object.  It sounded most closely to when one lightly blows air from their mouth.

Sighting Detail:

A dark orange fireball was spotted traveling North-East over Bundoora,  Australia.  As the object became nearer it was possible to see sparks/embers separating from it.  A good comparison is that of a 'sparkler' (fireworks) except all of the embers was either from the middle or completely behind the object.  A smoke trail spanned two thirds of the sky.

Unsure if it made impact with the ground.  It is not unreasonable to suspect it did because my best estimate is that the object was no more than 3 - 5 thousand feet high when directly above me.  However, I simply lost it over the few trees in the direction it headed

I've been fortunate to see many fireballs before, however this one was characteristic because I could actually identify it as beginning high in the sky and ending just a few thousand feet above the ground.  This is also supported by the unusualness of it actually becoming brighter as it traveled the sky and got closer to the ground.

After the event I even approached a couple walking down the street to see if they witnessed it as well.  They noted that they did not, but thought it strange that a weird sound was present, but they could not identify where.

I am currently attempting to depict this in picture form for reference.

KUSA - Beginning at 6:15 Thursday morning 9NEWS was flooded with calls from viewers, many of whom said, “I have just seen the most incredible thing ever in my life.”

That incredible thing appears to have been either space junk or a large meteor falling from north to south in the western part of the city. At this time, 9NEWS has not received any reports of personal injury or property damage.

9NEWS spoke with a representative at the Air Force Space Command who said they are analyzing the data and hope to have some official word early Thursday morning. They believe it could have been a meteor or space junk. The Air Force Space Command tracks space junk and all items entering the atmosphere.

Viewers from all over the region have been calling 9NEWS, some as far away as Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming, to report their sightings.

If you saw the meteor and would like to share your photos or video, visit the digital network.

Sound: Yes.  Like a sparkler sound.

The fireball was solid at first like shooting star but then it broke up like a sparkler and color changes from blue to green.  It traveled East to West and the brightness was compared to a Roman Candle "firework".  Color change as it broke up blue to green and at the front a bright object kept going out of sight. This was the first time I saw one do a color change.
